OLD  B.S.Ed. information
for students entering in 2005 or earlier

Students wishing to graduate with a B.S.Ed. in Technology Education from Central Connecticut State University are required to complete 130 credits as described in the CCSU undergraduate catalog. Fifty-six credits (about 19 classes) are in general education; the remaining 77 credits (22 courses, including two student-teaching experiences) are in the major.

Students should be qualified to apply for Professional Acceptance into the program at the start of their fourth full-time semester at CCSU (transfer students may be able to apply earlier). Professional acceptance requires passing a basic skills test; possessing a minimum GPA; and several other conditions. Completion of the technology education program will require at least three semesters (not including summer or winter sessions) after professional acceptance. Thus it is strongly recommended that students prepare for professional acceptance no later than the beginning of their second year at CCSU. See your advisor for details.

Major Courses (77 credits)

Unlike General Education requirements, major courses are not chosen from a list. The following courses must all be taken prior to graduation. Substitutions are rarely made and, except in the case of transfer students, must be made in advance with the chair of the department offering the course.

Technology Courses (39 credits; 13 courses)

These courses are offered regularly during the Fall and Spring semesters and occasionally during the summer sessions.

CET 113, EMEC 114,  MFG 118, MFG 121, and GRT 212 are introductory courses required of various School of Technology majors. Only MFG 121 has a prerequisite.

TE 213, 214, and 215 are intermediate courses for Technology Education majors. These courses focus primarily on technical content. They do not have prerequisites.

TE 410, 420, 430, and 445 are advanced technological systems courses for Technology Education majors which focus on both technical content and the delivery of that content. TE 450 is a capstone  course which ties together content from the other four systems courses. All five of these courses have prerequisites.

Professional Courses (26 credits; 9 courses)

Of these nine professional courses, only TE 199, 399, and 428 do not require professional acceptance.

You may not enroll in EDTE 316 and EDSC 375 simultaneously.

A majority of these courses require substantial out-of-class observation time which must be conducted at elementary, middle, or high schools. For this reason, most of these courses are not available during the summer or winter.

Student Teaching (12 credits; 2 courses)

Student teaching consists of two 6-credit courses: EDSC 414, an eight-week assignment in a middle school, and EDSC 415, an eight-week assignment in a high school. These two courses are taken sequentially in either the fall or spring semester. You must be available full-time during the entire semester to complete these courses.

It is possible to student-teach without having fulfilled all of your general education requirements; however, you must complete all professional and technology requirements.

General Education (53 credits)

Six of the 53 credits in general education must be designated as International [I] courses. These may be in any Study Area or Skill Area, or may be electives.

Courses taken to fulfill General Education requirements must be selected from the list in the catalog which was in effect when you entered CCSU. For example, not all Art classes can be used to satisfy the “Arts and Humanities” study area. Make sure it’s on the list!

Study Areas (30 credits)

Study Area I.  Arts and Humanities (9 credits, no more than 6 credits from any one discipline)
At least 3 credits in literature are required, plus two more courses in this study area.

Study Area II.  Social Sciences (9 credits, no more than 6 credits from any one discipline)
Technology Education majors must take HIST 261 or HIST 262, plus two more courses in this area.
Technology Education majors are recommended to take TE 110 in this study area.

Study Area III.  Behavioral Sciences (6 credits)
Technology Education majors must take PSY 236, plus one more course in this study area.

Study Area IV.  Natural Sciences (6–7 credits)
Technology Education majors must take PHYS 111 and CHEM 111.

Skill Areas (14 to 20 credits)

Skill Area I. Communication Skills (6 credits)
ENG 110 required before earning 61 credits, plus one more course in this skill area.
Technology Education majors are recommended to take COMM 115 or COMM 140 in this skill area.

Skill Area II. Mathematics (6 credits)
Technology Education majors must take STAT 104
(those entering the program prior to must 2002 take MATH 115 instead).
NOTE: You must take at least one "MATH" class.
NOTE: Neither MATH 099 nor MATH 101 count toward this requirement
Technology Education majors are recommended to take MATH 115.

Skill Area III. Foreign Language Proficiency (0–6 credits)
Most students either meet this requirement by sucessfully completing (a) “three sequential years of one foreign language at the high-school level” or (b) two foreign-language courses (including 112) at CCSU. You may also test out of this requirement; see the catalog for details.

Skill Area IV. University Requirement (2–3 credits)
PE 244 is required of students entering CCSU with fewer than 15 credits.
Technology Education majors entering with 15 or more credits satisfy this requirement with GRT 212.

Electives (3 to 9 credits)

Electives in the TE program are “free electives.” Students may choose any course(s) to satisfy this requirement.
